Successful Kindergarten Karnival!

Kindergarten Karnival was a huge success! We received several positive reviews from preschool teachers, parents and students. 145 preschoolers had the opportunity to get a brief glimpse into our fantastic Kindergarten program here at Assumption School, participating in fun and interactive Kindergarten activities.   Children were organized into groups of ten and encountered a variety of stations which highlighted our exciting facility.  One station took place in the gym where kids used the giant parachute and played with scooters.  They also enjoyed a healthy snack, sang in the music room, played educational games in the computer lab, made crafts and engaged in fun socializing activities in the Kindergarten classroom. At the end of their exciting sessions, preschoolers received a free book along with their personal framed photograph that they all decorated in their own way Full-day Kindergarten registrations are now open: you can download our application directly from our website or you are more than welcome to come by the school and pick one up.

Go Canada! Go: our Kindergarten class

We've been busy PAINTING THE TOWN RED!
The Vancouver 2010 Olympics are here in all their glory!  We've had numerous discussions about the Olympics - a little history, meaning of the rings, the torch relay, athletes, the hope for peace that the Olympics bring, and so forth.
On February 3rd, the Torch Relay came to Powell River.  The Kindergarten children, along with many other Assumption students, made their own torches.
Most of the children in our class attended the very exciting Olympic Torch Relay Celebration at the Powell River Rec Complex the night of February 3rd and shared their stories the following day.
Today, we were so very, very lucky to have Devin's Auntie Trina join us as a guest speaker.  She was one of the torch bearers on the morning of February 4th, as the torch made it's way to Saltery Bay.
Trina brought her Olympic relay suit, special mittens, hat, T-shirt, and that beautiful torch to share with us.  Trina explained what the torch symbolizes and showed us all the very special and well-thought out aspects of it!
Trina also shared how she came to be a torch bearer and just how very exciting and honourable it was.  The sense of pride all Canadians are feeling with the Vancouver Olympics is so wonderful to see and experience!
Check out the pictures from February 3rd and today.  Oh, and check out our ever-growing Olympic board out in front of our class.  We have the Canadian flag up there along with the Olympic flags made by the children, info about medal standings, athletes, daily Olympic events and more!

FULL-DAY KINDERGARTEN offered in September 2010

We are very excited to be able to offer full-day Kindergarten in September 2010. Our Kindergarten teacher, Miss Lisa Marie Labossiere, has over 20 years of experience - most of it in teaching but also as a Kinesiologist and Preschool Supervisor. She also holds a Special Education and a Physical Education Specialist degree. She is an energetic, warm, team-oriented person with the ability to work co-operatively and add positively to the classroom environment.

Our Kindergarten program is designed to help each child reach his or her full potential. We strive to provide constructive and consistent learning experiences that help build each child's confidence, encourage them to continue to see learning as both enjoyable and useful, and provide a strong foundation for their future intellectual, physical, emotional, creative, spiritual, and social development. Children learn through integrated activities, play, and inquiry-based activities.

In each child, the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and creative development are interrelated. In order to address all dimenisons of the child, the Kindergarten program also includes opportunities for self-expression and self-discovery through music, drama, and language activities, as well as for co-operative activities with peers.

Necessary adaptations and/or modifications are and will be made for children with special needs. Strengths and needs as well as an Action Plan are discussed with a team of key individuals including parents, teachers, principal, Learning Assistance teacher, Speech-Language Pathologist, physiotherapist, and any other para-professionals involved with the child.
