In Drama, students will explore and learn about the various ways to express thoughts, feelings and beliefs through the art of performance. In this elective, students will learn a variety of dramatic forms to portray a given theme, story or structure. Students will participate in class and will use the skills they are learning about drama and relationships to perform at various school events, assemblies, and finally at the Christmas concert in December. This is a fun and interactive learning experience for students to express themselves in diverse ways. The main goal of this elective is for students to have the opportunity to explore and become more aware of drama and theater and utilize these skills in various aspects of their life experiences.
Students will learn the basic chords and will learn how to play some well known and contemporary songs. They will also become proficient in reading a guitar chart and practice a variety of standard rhythms and scales. We will learn some guitar songs and perform them at our Christmas concert in December. Students will also acquire the skills of tuning and replacing strings on a guitar. My goal is that students will have a positive introduction to playing the guitar so that they gain the enthusiasm to keep playing in the future.
| This elective will consist of two separate courses:
Boating Safety Course: The Canadian Coast Guard has introduced new regulations for operators of pleasure boats fitted with a motor and used for recreational purposes. By law, as of September 15, 2002, if you operate a power boat of less than 4 metres (13.2 feet), you have to show proof of operator competency. All other power-boat operators must show proof by September 15, 2009. Keep in mind, if you are between 12-16 years of age, and not supervised by a person over 16 years of age, you will not be able to operate a power-driven boat of more than 40 horse power. This elective will give the students the opportunity to study, “The Boat Pro Manual”, an accredited boat proficiency course developed by the Canadian Coast Guard. Upon completion of this manual, the students will write a supervised exam and if they pass, they will receive the Canadian Coat Guard (CCG) Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC), which looks similar to a driver’s license. This is an elective that will require study and effort. You have to pass the exam to get certified. The cost of writing the exam is $15.00. Lifesaver Course: During this elective you will learn basic first aid, including artificial respiration. This elective will give you the skills you need to respond confidently to an emergency situation. Think of all the fun you can have bandaging up your classmates! Once you have completed the elective you will receive a certificate verifying that you have completed the Lifesaver First Aid course. The cost of certification is $10.00. |
In Art, students will have the opportunity to examine and explore a number of various art forms and techniques. Students will learn about these techniques both by looking at famous art pieces but will also practice these techniques and construct their own personal art portfolios. Such techniques will include a number of various alternative forms of representation including: ceramics, drawing, painting and sketching graphics, sculpture, textiles and much more. The estimated cost for the Art elective is roughly $25.00. Our main goal for this elective is for students to not only learn about different visual art forms and the correct terminology that accompanies this, but also for them to explore and develop their own artistic skills.
Develop your individual and group musical skills on the instrument of your choice (availability for some instruments may be limited – see September Rental Day hosted by Long and McQuade) (Electric guitars are welcome). The course will encompass a wide range of musical styles from classic to world, to contemporary. There will be an emphasis on rhythm, “ear” development, hands-on performance and understanding musical notation as it applies to group work. Students will have the opportunity to apply their skills in trios and combos as well as a complete group work. There will also be the opportunity to incorporate individual and group vocals to the consummate band sound. If time permits, students may also contribute original compositions that may become part of the total group effort.
In Information Technology we will be using a variety of technology to accomplish various goals. This will include: computers, still cameras and video cameras. Students will learn how to take pictures and then alter the picture in various ways. Some students will be able to create their own video productions. Various software will be used and students will be exposed to several ways to make slideshows and audio visual presentations. Students taking this class should have a USB flash memory to facilitate movement of work.
In Home Economics, the students will meet from 12:30 to 2:45pm. The course will cover and demonstrate safe and appropriate use of equipment needed to prepare food items. They will learn the essential components of all food groups using the Canada Food Guide. There will be material to read each class and a written assignment. They will then bake or cook a recipe from that component and enjoy eating it. They will plan meals and prepare an Italian dinner at the end of the course. The items they make will be ones that they can use throughout their lives. A special surprise will be made for Mother’s Day. The cost for this elective is $30.00 to cover baking and cooking supplies
In Community Recreation, students will have the opportunity to engage in and learn about many of the clubs and organizations that are in Powell River. The details are still being worked out; however, possible opportunities will include learning about and visiting: the ECU, Olive Devaud, Otago Rugby Club, hiking and cleaning up garbage in the great outdoors, Myrtle Point Golf Club, Powell River Gymnastics Club, the Powell River Leisure Centre, Catalyst Paper Mill, the Sliammon Community and more. Through exploring this elective, students will be able to discover the various opportunities and community organizations that are available in Powell River. The estimated cost for the Community Recreation elective is roughly $40.00. A more detailed schedule will follow.
In this introductory class to the study of business we will look at some of the basics involved in running a business. We will learn about the forces of ‘Supply and Demand’ and learn how the growth of the Chinese economy affects housing in Powell River. We will also look at some personal skills such as; writing a resume and improving your typing speed and accuracy.
In Media Studies students will be provided with the opportunity to explore a number of various diverse media forms and examine these critically. Some of the forms of media that we will investigate include: newspapers, magazines, advertisements, the internet, television, music, and more. Students will utilize critical thinking skills in examining the media and its impact on society. We will also look closely at how the media has both a positive as well as a negative impact on our culture, and how it has impacted the diverse cultures around the world. The goal of the Media Studies elective is for students to comprehend how the media has impacted people on a personal level, as well as how it has influenced society as a whole and contributed to the development of our culture.
