Meet The Staff

We, at Assumption, are extremely proud of the teachers that have been teaching our students - some of them for many years. We have teachers with many different areas of expertise, allowing our children to get the very best education in all areas of interest.

Below you will find short biographies on all our teachers to give you a sense of who they are and what they stand for.

Mrs Neri

Teaching Grade 1
I have been at Assumption since 1987. During this time I have had the opportunity to teach Gr. 3 and Learning Assistance. Currently I am teaching grade 1 from Monday to Thursday all day. My goal is to have a classroom with lots of learning and lots of fun.

Mrs. Brach

Teaching Grade 1 & Learning Assistance and Special Education Teacher
I have taught at our school for more than 20 years now and feel that it is wonderful to be part of the tradition at Assumption School and to see the development of our fine school continue. As a teacher, I strive to find the students' strengths and talents and at the same time encourage children to work to develop the areas where they need to grow.

Mrs Neath

Teaching: Grade 2
I graduated from Malaspina University-College in 2000 with a B.Ed and a B.A. in History and Anthropology. I then moved to Calgary where I taught for 3 years. Powell River is my hometown and I am glad to be back to raise my own family. I'm especially excited to be back at Assumption since I attended the school from preschool to Gr.7. I'm looking forward to this new experience and helping the students at Assumption achieve their academic goals and to grow in their Catholic faith.

Miss Cimaglia

Teaching: Grade 3
I graduated from the University of Victoria in 2007 with Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts degrees.  I taught half-time grade 3 with Mrs. Massullo when Mrs. Neath was on maternity leave, and I am now back full time with this year's grade 3 class.
I feel fortunate to work in a school where our religion can be cross-curricular and integrated into all aspects of school life. I am very excited to be back and hope to stay for many years to come.

Mr LaFrance

Teaching: Grade 4
This is my second time working at Assumption. I received my BA from the Seminary of Christ the King, where I spent 5 years as a seminarian and an aspiring monk. The next step in my journey led me towards SFU and teaching. I have been teaching grade four for over twelve years. I love to challenge my students to look at things in surprising ways.

Mrs Wyatt

Teaching: Grade 5                                                                                                            I have worked at Assumption School since 2002. My favourite part of working at this school is taking a spiritual journey with my students. This opportunity allows the students to learn more about their faith, but the best part is to be able share what these students know with their younger buddies in the Kindergarten class. These cross-grade lessons include learning about how to keep our bodies healthy with food and activity, math lessons and reading. I run a salmon enhancement program inside the classroom and engage my students in stewardship responsibilities for our school community. I teach my students to participate in conserving resources like electricity, recycling drink containers, paper and have added composting to my stewardship lessons. Also, I love to work in the school garden with my students. Through all of this the students also learn strategies about problem solving and decision making in their social interactions.

Mr. Baron

Teaching: Music//Choir and Social Studies

Mr. Baron has been teaching for 17 years.  He has taught everything from Arts and Crafts to Music, Band, Grades 7, 5, 4, 3, and 2.  Mr. Baron was a professional musician and recording artist,  touring Canada and the United States.  He brings his love of music and art to the students of Assumption through original music, concerts, and productions that he writes and composes for.  He brings his love of liturgical music to his students encouraging them to bring their talents into Friday masses.  He also started a Junior and Senior choir. He looks forward to all of his students becoming leaders in their school, parish, and community.

Mrs Bigold

Teaching: Grade 6
I teach grade 6 at Assumption School and I am a true Powell Riverite. I was in the grade 4 class when Assumption first opened in 1961. I began teaching grade 6 at Assumption in the fall of 1994 and try to make learning fun. I enjoy having a lively classroom where children can experience a wide variety of activities.
As well as grade 6, I teach the grade 7/8/9 Home Economics Elective, prepare students for our school masses, help with religious ceremonies, coach grade 6/7 Volleyball team and stand in for our principal, Mrs. Richardson, when she is not available.
I truly love my job and try to instill in my students the desire to strive to do their best in all they do. It is wonderful to teach in an environment where one can talk of God, and my hope is that the children will live their faith in all that they do.

Mr. Watson

Teaching Grade 7
I graduated from UBC in 1982 with a B. Ed. in Secondary School Math and Social Studies (Geography). I worked for nine years in Mount Currie, a reserve located north of Whistler, at the Xit'olacw Community School, teaching Math, Geography and Computers. I moved with my family to Powell River to teach at Assumption School in 1992 and have been the grade 7 teacher ever since. In my class I try to meet the needs of the individual student and let them know that they matter and help them to achieve all that they can.
