Festival of the Performing Arts 2011

Arts

This year we entered two choirs and three bands into the
Festival of the Performing Arts.  All of the students really "out-did" themselves with all of their performances.
We thank all of the participants, parents, teachers, and students for all of their hard work and look forward to next year - onward and upward!

    This year’s
We Day in Vancouver, attended by a variety of students in Gr. 7, 8, 9, was a huge success, and it was therefore decided as a school community that we would like to become a We School in order to continue learning how to take part in social justice.  In order to participate as a We School, students in the senior grades have taken on the role of achieving one local and one global action of social justice.
At the start of this year, students organized “Halloween for Hunger” where they collected canned food items for our local food bank.  The entire school put forth tremendous effort and collected 247 cans, proving this local act to be a huge success!
It is now time to work towards completing our global act.  It has been decided by our senior students that they would like to continue the theme of supporting both education and students in Haiti through the Free the Children Foundation.  Therefore, they selected to raise enough money to provide a year-long lunch programs for two schools in Haiti.  Each lunch program is $500.00 so therefore, students planned to raise $1000.00 to support children in this struggling country.
So that others could eat, students at Assumption in grades 7-9 were invited to participate in a 24 Hour Famine, in support and solidarity with this very worthy cause.  Here are the details:
    · When: 6:00pm Friday March 4th to 6:00pm Saturday March 5th
    · Where: In the Assumption School Gym
    · What: Raise $500.00 X 2 = $1000.00 to support lunch programs in two schools in Haiti
    · Why: To encourage awareness of social justice issues in our world, and to work together to support other students and their education
Who: The 24 Hour Famine is open to students in grades 7-9, but all grades were welcome to support and assist in this worthy global effort!!
  • Grade 7 teacher Mr. Watson and Grade 8 teacher Mr. Maguire have offered to shave their heads at the assembly on Monday morning at 9:00am if the $1000.00 goal is met!!
Fortunately, not only was the $1000.00 goal met, students far surpassed this goal raising over $6,000.00, and money is still coming in!  This means, Assumption school will be able to support 12 year long lunch programs in 5 different schools in Haiti!
